A quarter-century at the heart of the Dutch internet

On 31 January 1996, Piet Beertema, the man behind creation of the .nl domain, got together with Ted Lindgreen and Boudewijn Nederkoorn to set up the Foundation for Internet Domain Registration in the Netherlands. Since that day, we've been honoured to continue the work that Piet began.

New Legal Follow-up Module added to SIDN BrandGuard

With the help of ICT-related legal advice provider ICTRecht, we now offer SIDN BrandGuard subscribers the option of getting legal advice and initiating proceedings if their brand name is abused in a (maliciously registered) domain name.

SIDN transfers CyberSterk to Guardian360 for the next phase

CyberSterk – our security solution for SMEs – was transferred to our long-time partner Guardian360. Guardian360 is an experienced market player with an extensive client portfolio, capable of taking CyberSterk forward and thus promoting security in the SME sector.

In the Netherlands, cybersecurity expertise of the kind needed to counter large-scale cyber-attacks is in short supply. The Twente University Centre for Cybersecurity Research aims to change that. We co-founded the project and remain involved.

The .nl domain turns thirty-five!

A Sunday in April marked the thirty-fifth anniversary of the .nl domain's formation. A few days after .nl's creation, on 1 May 1986, the first .nl domain name – cwi.nl – was registered. Our national domain has since become one of the world’s biggest.

DNS vulnerability that makes resolvers susceptible to DDoS attacks removed

With our partners, we localised and resolved a vulnerability in the DNS. The vulnerability meant malicious actors could potentially use DNS resolvers to mount large-scale DDoS attacks on top-level domains.

SIDN takes part in biggest national cyber-emergency exercise ever

In June, the NCTV and NCSC organised the biggest cyber-emergency exercise ever held in the Netherlands, ISIDOOR 2021. We took part because we're a designated 'operator of essential services'. As well as reassuring us that we're generally well-prepared, the exercise flagged up a few areas where we can do even better.

SIDN and Zynyo offer IRMA-enabled signing

We entered into a partnership with Zynyo, the electronic signing platform. The integration of IRMA into the Zynyo platform underscores the great potential of IRMA. It gives enterprises and public bodies assurance that the person signing an electronic document is who they say they are. At the same time, the signatory is assured of the privacy they're entitled to.

DNS Resolution Required is a simple but effective tool in the fight against botnets and other malware that modifies DNS settings or does its own DNS resolution. It's part of our ongoing contribution to a securer internet.

SIDN BrandGuard: Domain Name Surveillance Service gets a new name

Since its launch, our Domain Name Surveillance Service (DBS) has evolved. By autumn 2021, we felt the name no longer fitted. So we renamed the service to coincide with the unveiling of a completely redesigned web interface. SIDN BrandGuard now protects more than three hundred brand names.

To mark thirty-five years of .nl, we decided to look back at the history of our national domain. As a vital component of the Dutch economy and Dutch society, .nl is an institution the Netherlands can be proud of. An institution that deserves its own podcast!
